My Work on MoSoMuSo

As part of MoSoMuSo, my role was to help complete the qualitative research portion, which consists of user studies, participatory design workshops, and other qualitative research techniques. The qualitative research is an integral component of the project, as the results from user studies will ultimately inform the design of a our Connected Walkman. My work consisted primarily of two main sub-projects: 1) conducting 5 pilot interviews and 15 interviews in order to gain an understanding of our typical user and his or her personal walkman use and 2) organizing a Participatory Design Workshop called “SIMu: Social Interaction Through Music” which was held on February 14 at Sony CSL. In carrying out these two qualitative projects, I worked very closely with Olivier Bau, Ph.D. Student of Insiitu INRIA, and Dr. Wendy Mackay, director of INRIA. Her expertise in qualitative methodology was extremely helpful to us in designing our user studies and analyzing the results of our Participatory Design Workshop.

Before beginning these two projects, however, much of my work consisted of learning more about the field of human-music interaction and understanding how exactly to conduct qualitative research within this field. After checking out the following sections entitled “Interviews” and “SIMu”, I encourage you to take a look at some of preparation documents (listed below) that I created in order to carry out the interviews and participatory design workshop. While the “Interview” and “SIMu” section give an overarching view of the projects and results, the documents you'll see below will give you an idea of the nitty-gritty, yet necessary, work we needed to complete in order to carry out this type of qualitative research. A lot of the preparation documents are in rough form, but they provide a thorough view of the types of daily tasks I completed in the first few weeks of my internship and how they helped me to prepare for the interviews and participatory design workshop.
