For this project I chose to rework the spoken word/music piece by Pearl Jam titled “I’m Open”. I have always related to the sentiments behind the lyrics, so when I heard we were doing a project involving a short dialogue, I knew I had to use them. I found this assignment to be fitting too since Pearl Jam recorded one of their albums entirely in binaural format (aptly titled Binaural). I first recorded the dialogue on to Audacity and used fade in, fade out, and silencing to clean up the track.  I then decided to add a few sound effects in such as a swell when the narrator is talking about waiting for a presence, the clock ticking when waiting and other various effects. I manufactured these noises by playing with delay and reverb effects along with different registers of my voice. I accented where the “chorus” of the original song is by having a scattered modulation of the narrator’s final sentiment “I’m Open”. The breath noises used at the beginning and end of the track were processed with fades and echo/delays as well. I then cut up the pieces I wanted to be in each channel in Audacity after processing any talking pieces with reverb through the provided Chuck code on Github. When I had my finished 4 mono sound files I simply ran it through the 4 channel player and recorded the results.
