Pandit
Nayan Ghosh, one India's greatest tabla players, will be presenting his first
tabla solo ever in California at Stanford University’s beautiful new concert
space in the CCRMA building. He will be joined on sarangi by Pandit Ramesh Mishra.
Pandit Nayan Ghosh is one of the preeminent tabla players today, regarded
by many as the greatest performer of the traditional tabla repertoire of the
Farrukhabad style. His powerful tone, depth of feeling and vast repertoire have
made him the musical heir to the greatest tabla player of all time, Ustad Ahmedjan
Thirakwa. Pandit Nayan Ghosh's profound musical talent has allowed him to become
not only a renowned tabla player but also one of India's top-ranking sitar players,
a nearly unprecedented feat in Indian classical music.
Pandit Nayan Ghosh was trained by his father, the legendary Padmabhushan Nikhil Ghosh, and practiced under the careful eye of Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa, who lived with them for many years in Mumbai. In addition to his father, Pandit Nayan Ghosh has accompanied many of the all-time greats, such as his uncle Pandit Pannalal Ghosh, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Ustad Vilayat Khan and Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta.

Ramesh Mishra’s sense of melody and rhythmic accuracy have made him the accompanist of choice for for nearly every tabla player, including luminaries such as Pandit Anindo Chatterjee and Pandit Swapan Chaudari. Ramesh Mishra was born in Banaras is 1947 but has spent most of his life in Calcutta. He was trained in the Banaras style by his father Ram Nath Mishra, and was also influenced by his uncle, the legendary Pandit Gopal Mishra, and Gopal MishraÍs brother Hanuman Prasad Mishra.
