The implementation of the phase vocoder using the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) [195,8] was accompanied by a large number of papers concerned with processing the short-time Fourier transform [8,10] for various purposes [143,9,202,172,85,171]. The phase vocoder is generally regarded as a fixed band-pass filter bank. The STFT, on the other hand, is normally regarded as a sequence of fast Fourier transforms through time. It turns out the STFT can additionally be interpreted as a downsampled filter bank [10], as developed in Chapter 9. The filter-bank interpretation is the Fourier dual of the transform-sequence interpretation.
