Description

My radioplay consists of a murder mystery with three characters: Jim, Alice, and a Policeman. In the opening scene, Jim and Alice are speaking in a moving car. Jim and Alice's voices are played through channels 1 and 2 respectively to give the listener the sense of sitting between the conversation - meanwhile, the ambient car noise is played through all four channels to create a sense of enclosure and space. Other sound effects are purely directional, such as Jim's jangling keys when opening the front door. When the police officer arrives, he is played through channel 3 with Jim and Alice still played through channels 1 and 2 - this creates a new sense of space where the listener can hear and visualize the questioning while standing in the middle. While Jim or Alice are answering the officer's questions, the sound of pen writing on paper is played through the same channel the officer is to let the listener know the officer is still there. The telephone ring is played through both channels 3 and 4, while the pick up, talking, and hang up are all played through only channel 3 - again, to localize the sound to the officer's position. Finally, the handcuff sound effect is played through channels 2 and 3 to localize the sound to both the officer and Alice, unifying the action.
