Music 220a Homework 4

Details:

My piece, based in F major, is composed of five sections, with each section utilizing four notes (a personal choice I made). The first section begins on F, and has C, D, and E as its other notes. The next three sections are successive steps up: the second section begins on G and also has D, E, and F-sharp; the third section begins on A and also has E, F-sharp, and G-sharp, and the fourth section begins on B-flat (since B-flat is in the F major scale) and also has F, G, and A. The fifth section serves as a coda, beginning on F and containing the notes of the F major triad: F, A, C.

For each successive section, the different instrument has different effects built onto it. For the first section, the instrument is differentiated only by a gain increase (95.0 vs. 80.0 for both instruments). For the second section, in addition to the gain increase, the differentiated instrument is an octave higher. For the third section, the different instrument has a higher index on top of the gain and octave. For the fourth section, the different instrument has a different ratio, on top of the three other components. Finally, the differentiated instrument keeps the same parameters for the fifth and final section, bringing the piece home.

I mixed up the channels constantly. For the first section, I had the differentiated instrument coming out of the right side of the speakers, and the other two coming out of the left. For the second, they switch: the differentiated instrument comes out of the left side, while the other two instruments come out of the right. This repeats for the next three sections, with the piece ending with the different instrument on the right sie and the other two on the left side. This adds variety, and creates an ever changing spacial landscape.

Finally, in terms of timing, I wanted it to be kind of like a baseball organ that takes a little while to warm up, but once it gets going, it keeps its intensity. Thus, after about a seven second warmup, the piece settles in and drives at the constant fast tempo for the duration of the piece.
