Music 220a - Homework 5: FFT-based Real-time Tracking

Chuck Files

Sound Files

The random .wav download gifted me with nature-23.wav, an 11-minute sound file filled mainly with different bird calls and what seemed to be sounds from the ocean. A roughly-sketched score of what can be heard is provided below. To recreate and streamline the sounds, I recorded myself whislting and mimicking bird noises and sloshing water around in a Nalgene water bottle. I then ran these samples through the amplitude spectrum tracker and frequency tracker, respectively. To complement this, I decided to record the sounds of a man running along a beach promenade in the free section. To do this, I recorded running footsteps and heavy panting and ran them through multiTrackers.ck. The first rhythm section uses this same computer sound. I played about 30 seconds worth of Led Zeppelin's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" on acoustic guitar. For the second section, I played the intro to Fleet Foxes' "The Shrine/An Argument". My musical vision in this assignment was to sonify the actions and emotions of a serious man, juxtaposed with the lightness and ephemeral quality of the nature sounds.
