Music 220a Homework #3
For this assignment, I sampled Anushka Shankar's song entitled “Naked” and played it along with a model of a sitar in Chuck.
Shankar's primary instrument is the sitar, and I wanted to simulate a playback of the generated Chuck sound and the sample of “Naked”.
I experimented with several parameters in Chuck. I found the sitar sound to be a bit harsh, so I passed the sitar model through a low pass filter and edited the frequencies of the sitar to be appropriate with the sample. I also experimented with the sample's speed and found that the sitar worked best with the sample at a faster playback rate.
The piece's structure starts off with a sitar solo of randomly generated sounds. The sample is introduced also at random. The sitar and sample then play with a logistic map and random setting respectively. Eventually, they come together and create a more coherent sound. The sitar and the sample have their own solos which are again randomized. A reprise of the sinusoidal sitar and sample play again and the piece concludes with a sinusoidal sitar melody.
