Music 220A Final Project
For my final project, I wanted to do a portfolio review of all the concepts taught in Music 220a. Using ChucK, I assembled several audio clips using the logistic mapping techniques from HW4 and the FM streaming illusion from HW5. After all the appropriate audio was assembled in ChucK, final recordings were put together as binaural audio from HW2. I will focus first on describing the audio presented for my final project.
Final Project Presentation Audio
Logistic Mapping 1
“Part IV” on Keith Jarrett's live recordings from Carnegie Hall and Apollo Sunshine's “We Are Born When We Die”
Final Audio: Keith Jarrett and Apollo Sunshine
I took these two recordings and used the concepts of logistic mapping to create binaural audio. I enjoy Keith Jarrett's jazz piano performances and wanted to see what the effect would be splicing it with another song. I chose “We Are Born When We Die” since it has some orchestration and was curious to see what the audio would sound like when put together. There are four sound snippets all processed using logistic mapping:
Keith Jarrett sample taken from a different part of the performance (Clip / ChucK)
Apollo Sunshine sample rate adjusted to value of 1.5 – sped up (Clip / ChucK)
Apollo Sunshine sample rate adjusted to value of -0.5 - slowed down and (Clip / ChucK)
I am satisfied with the final product of these two clips put together. Because the Keith Jarrett sample is in the style of free-form jazz, it went well with the logistic mapped samples of the Apollo Sunshine song.
Logistic Mapping 2
“Are You That Somebody” by Aaliyah
Final Audio: Aaliyah
I was going through my music and wanted to see what this song would sound like when processed in ChucK. Also using the concepts of logistic mapping, I used two samples from “Are You That Somebody” by Aaliyah created an interesting audio effect. Here are the two samples edited in ChucK:
Aaliyah sample slowed down and reversed (Clip)
Aaliyah sample slowed down and reversed with normal speed overlay (Clip)
Note: While the second clip was being processed in ChucK, I simultaneously sporked another clip with a normal speed. The same code is used for both samples. It can be found here.
FM Streaming Illusion
I thought this particular assignment was fun to do and did an extension of my HW4 assignment changing the FM radios and parameters of my code. I focused on an A major triad throughout the entire piece and still achieved the same desired effect.
Final Project Explorations
Logistic Mapping Percussion
“See-Line Woman” by Nina Simone
I wanted to create a percussive backbone to something in ChucK and really liked the rhythm section in Nina Simone's “See-Line Woman”. I used mostly a logistic ratio to create the percussive repetition. There are two sections – each 10 seconds long – that are repeated throughout this audio clip.
More Logistic Mapping
“May This Be Love” by Jimi Hendrix
For this Jimi Hendrix clip, I also used logistic mapping and sped up this sample of a song by Jimi Hendrix. I liked the effect of speeding up part of the guitar riffs from this Jimi Hendrix song. A low pass filter was then applied in Audacity.
FM Audio A Major V-I Repetition
I wanted to create a audio using audio from FM Synthesis and just wanted to see what the product would be with just two tones alternating. The two alternating are A and E. I intend to use this clip as a backbone to additional audio.
