Machine Listening, Computer Audition, and Music Information Retrieval
Feature extraction from acoustic musical audio signals
Computational models of rhythm and rhythmic perception, including beat tracking and tempo estimation
Applications of ensemble learning techniques to machine listening problems
Real-time implementation of machine listening algorithms
My dissertation, titled "An Ensemble Framework for Real-Time Audio Beat Tracking", was successfully defended in May 2015. [pdf]
Audio Networking
Networking of uncompressed audio signals over high-speed networks for remote collaboration including:
Long-distance multimedia telematic performance
Remote audio post-production systems for cinema
My open-source networked audio system won a gold award at the Audio Engineering Society's Student Design Competition in October 2013.
You can check out the project here: http://github.com/michelledaniels/streaming-audio. It was originally designed to add advanced audio support to SAGE visualization systems but can be used for many other wide-area networking applications as well.
