Music 220a – Homework 4: Auditory Streaming
About
This piece demonstrates the audio streaming illusion in two different sections. The first section cycles through a set of 5 notes played on four different instruments (defined by arrays of FM synth parameters), starting slowly and accelerating until the streaming illusion becomes apparent. After this, a different set of 7 notes is played on four instruments with distinct FM value from the first set. This section starts out fast with the streaming illusion intact before slowing down, destroying the illusion before eventually coasting to a stop. Randomly generated BandedWG bowed notes add atmosphere and bridge the two sections. The instruments are mono sent to both stereo channels, as the reverb used forces them to be stereo and pre-empts the possibility of quadrophonic mixing (and eventually to binaural) as specified in the HW spec. I like the way this sounds better anyway. |
