My original goal was to create a drum solo in 64 channels, intended to be played in the listening room. I wanted the listener to feel like they were inside of a drumset while it was being played. I was advised, however, to stick to just 8 channels for this assignment. In the performance version, I have created an 8 channel surround sound experience. I want it to feel like an (aesthetically pleasing) percussive battle going on in the room when this piece is played. To create a similar effect in headphones, I turned it into a binaural piece (for this, I was limited to 4 channels). Personally, I don't think the full effect is quite experienced unless it's in 8 channels.
