In my final project, I hoped to transport the listener in to the moment of hearing a musician in a subway station. Listening to subway musicians has always been an especially important experience for me--because I find it so beautiful how the space because a perfect and unassuming performance space, with the echoes perfectly amplifying the sound of the instruments played. It always makes me pause, no matter how rushed I am. To recreate this moment, I used a panning script to make the sound of a train arriving and departing. I added on the sound of rain drops randomly falling, and incorporated this sound onto 4 channels. Then, I recorded the sound of a saxophone solo, with a filter added to create the echo-ing sound of a subway station. Partway through this solo, I added in bird sounds that corresponded to the tones of the saxophone--this was meant to be a more metaphorical moment, in which the listener is transported to a serene place beyond the train station. This moment in which just the saxophone and bird sounds play is contrasted with ambient noises of newspaper rustling, coughs, and shuffling feet that the listener also hears before this moment of being completely transported. I end my piece with the sound of another arriving train, drowning out the saxophone sounds and interrupting the serenity. And yet, the final few notes of the saxophone song, "Georgia On My Mind", play again at the end from all 4-channels, this time with no interrupting sounds--to recreate the listener's takeaway: an unexpected transportation to a clear internal headspace, amidst the commotion of the station.
