Music 220a Final Project

Long story short, I wanted to make a song that had the opportunity to change from listen to listen.

So I ended up making 3 songs with this idea in mind

1. A song that has a structure but varies in its melodic content every time you play it (inspired by Pauline Oliveros’ “Tuning Mediation”.

Chuck File

Recording

                This song was made in Chuck and uses 5 “Bowed” unit generators that randomly choose a note to play for a while and then have 3 possible actions afterwards: they can choose to play the same note for a longer amount of time, play the same note as the unit generator to its right (a-> b->c->d>e), or pick a new note to play.

2. A song that has a varying structure in that it each part or section of the song never changes but which section plays, if it plays at all, varies (swappable sections).

One Possibility

Chuck file that arranges the sections and can play all versions of the song if you’re lucky)

                Section 1 is always the same, but after its done it can lead into two different Sections: 2A or 2B.  Section 2 A (if chosen) can then go onto either Section 3A or 3B which both end the song or Section 2 B (if chosen) can go on to Section 4.

(mp3 is of Section 1 -> Section 2 A ->Section 3 A)

3. A song that incorporates a solo that varies from listen into its predefined/static instrumentation.

(Solo is just an arpeggiator set to random on different minor keys)
