Experiment Parameters

1200 stimuli are presented at random.  Exactly 300 of each stimulus will be presented.

Intervals experiment:

1-second stimuli; 1-second break between stimuli

Breaks presented after every 12 stimuli (subject controls break length)

“Halfway through experiment” message presented to subject at halfway point

Total length:

1200*(1 sec [stim] + 1 sec [break]) = 2400 sec/60 = 40 minutes without breaks

Melody experiment:

1.5-second stimuli; 1-second break between stimuli

Breaks presented every 10 stimuli (subject controls break length)

Halfway message as above

Total length:

1200*(1.5 sec [stim] + 1 sec [break]) = 3000 sec/60 = 50 minutes without breaks

28 electrodes are applied in the standard 10-20 configuration as shown:

The HEOG and VEOG electrodes are applied near the outer corner and above the eyebrow of the right eye.  The reference electrode (A2) is applied behind the right earlobe.

Subjects are instructed to focus the eyes on a fix point (“+”) in the center of the screen while attending to the sounds.  Subjects are asked to avoid blinking while the stimuli are playing.  The HEOG and VEOG electrodes track eye movements, though, so extraneous blinking can be removed during analysis by not including those ICA sources that are highly correlated with either vertical or horizontal eye movement.

Stimuli are presented using Presentation software and EEG data is recorded using Neuroscan 4.2.
