This piece is a little bit more experimental than it is musical, but it does have a consistent beat that I wanted to be able to work off of. The overall effect was something I called Red Alert, which is supposed to encompass 1980s-style computer statements of incoming missile strikes or the like. I put the bass part in a while loop that continues throughout the whole thing, and it is supposed to sound like an electronic alert sound. The random data noise is supposed to sound like the computers working behind the scenes, and the high siren is supposed to emulate an air raid siren, or something similar. I altered the reverb on the siren to give it a longer decay and a more open sound.
The data sets I used in this were the United States per capita GDP (1980-2010) and the standardized mortality per 1000 persons in England from 1866 to 1911. The former was used for a bass beat part, the latter was used as a siren. I also added a random sound generator within chucK.
