Temperature

And here is a bulleted list of other files:

I chose a data set on global surface air temperature change in degrees celsius. Given the pressing environmental concerns of our generation, with this piece I wanted to evoke an unsettling sense of urgency, as temperature increases across the years. Horror and thriller movie music accomplishes an unsettled feeling by pairing very high frequency sounds, that are traditionally thought of as comforting or non-threatening, with very low frequency sounds that are, for humans, evolutionarily associated with danger (growling larger animals, etc). This cognitive dissonance with nothing bridging the frequency gap creates an unsettled feeling. The high frequency sounds stay constant, and low frequency sine wave stays at a constant pitch, but pulses with the dataset, more alive and threatening. The escalating gain and frequency of the wind-like sound is tied to the data set of temperature change, escalating as the years go by and the change in temperature climbs, demanding the attention of the listener. The spacious sound of the wind can also be thought of as the emptiness of a desolate planet without much life left. I also have a low frequency square wave, that is so low you can hear the individual pulses in the waveform, almost like a ticking clock as if time's running out.
