I began with a sample from California Dreamin' by the Mamas and Papas. First I just played around with random samples from this song. In the process I noticed that the flute solo made for the most compelling sample and extending the samplerEnv.duration to 10000ms captured more of the note. As a result, I spliced out only the flute portion of the song and changed the duration.
Listening to random samples of only the flute solos, I was reminded of old two player flighting cames. The parts where new samples were taken sounded like puching sound effects. As a result, I wanted the physical synth to remind me of video game music. I chose HevyMetl as my physical instrument and played with its noteOn and noteOff values.
I arranged the music so it would sound like you were first in the menu (solo synth), in a round of battles, and then alternating between battles and menu.
