Downloading the cdrom images

There are three sets of cdrom images available:

  • The RedHat or Fedora install cdrom images (3 disks)
    Each of the three iso images is a replica of the corresponding RedHat 8.0, 9 or Fedora Core 1 install cdrom with an apt database of the packages it contains.

    This allows you to use them with the apt-cdrom command and treat the RedHat or Fedora Core cdroms as local apt repositories. If you have these disks you can manage all your packages (including the original RedHat or Fedora Core packages) using apt-get and/or synaptic. Very convenient.

    It is highly recommended that you either download or create the RedHat or Fedora Core Install cdroms. If you are doing a cdrom only install (ie: no network connection) and you have not installed all RedHat or Fedora Core packages then the apt-get or synaptic programs have no idea where to find the original packages that are not installed in your machine. Some Planet CCRMA packages may need original RedHat or Fedora Core packages that are not installed and apt-get or synaptic will not be able to find them. You will not be able to install the Planet CCRMA packages until you resolve the dependency by hand (it is not fun to have to do that).

  • The RedHat or Fedora Updates cdrom image (1 disk)
    These images contain the latest RedHat or Fedora Core updates up to the time of the creation of the iso images. You should always update through the online repository for a more up to date collection of fixes. The images do not include the updated kernels from RedHat to keep size down.

    You do not need to download them if you have kept your system up to date with RedHat's up2date system.

  • The Planet CCRMA cdrom images (2 disks)
    These images contain the Planet CCRMA software package collection.

If you are using a Linux machine to do the download, you can check the integrity of the cdrom image before burning the cd by using the md5sum command. The output of the command should match the checksum for the cdrom (they are listed below). For example:

md5sum planetccrma-20030226-i386-8.0-up.img
6db4e57119d7f3dd4e78846c32bcaa0c planetccrma-20030226-i386-8.0-up.img

You can download the iso cdroms from the Planet CCRMA main site in California, USA, or from one of the Planet CCRMA mirrors at IRCAM, ICEM or PlanetMirror (the links will take you to this section in the server you choose).

You should download the images that correspond to the version of RedHat you have installed. To find out which version of RedHat you have installed type:

cat /etc/redhat-release


The RedHat or Fedora Install cdrom images

If you are installing RedHat 8.0, 9, or Fedora Core 1 or 2 you can download the following images. They contain the original RedHat or Fedora Core install cdroms with apt databases of their contents. They are specially useful if you have not done (or are not planning to do) a complete install of all the distribution packages as all the packages that are part of the original distribution can be locally incorporated into the apt database.

If you have the original RedHat 8.0, 9, or Fedora Core 1 cdroms, a working linux machine with enough disk space and a working cdwriter you can recreate the apt-enabled images yourself. That will save the bandwidth and time of the download. Follow the instructions in the Creating the apt-enabled RedHat or Fedora Core cdroms appendix.

Check the integrity of the image before burning the cd. Here are the md5sum checksums for all the images:

Use your favorite cd burning tool to create the cdroms and take them home.


The RedHat or Fedora Updates cdrom images

You should also download one of the following images depending on the version of RedHat you have installed, they contain the latest updates from RedHat (at the time the images were created):

The Planet CCRMA cdrom images

There are two cdroms for each RedHat release. The ``Planet CCRMA Core'' cdrom contains the kernels and alsa sound drivers. The ``Planet CCRMA'' cdrom contains all the sound, music and video applications.

The ``Planet CCRMA'' cdrom also contains a snapshot of the Planet CCRMA documentation, just open ``file:///mnt/cdrom/software/index.html'' in your favorite browser (assuming the cdrom is mounted on /mnt/cdrom).

Check the integrity of the image before burning the cd. Here are the md5sum checksums for all the images:
