Gimp user's guide
The "gimp" is here (gimp == Gnu Graphics Manipulation Program). A monster pixel editor similar to Photoshop with layers and tons of plug-ins, only free and comes with source! You can write your own plug-ins if you dare, and there's even a scheme (ie: lisp) based scripting language...

Gimp is running on both Linux and SGIs. On both platforms just type "gimp" in a terminal (the absolute location of the executable is /usr/ccrma/bin/gimp). The first time you run it, it will create a configuration directory tree in your home directory starting at "~/.gimp". If you load an image a right click in the image itself will bring a BIG menu of editing options.
