Printing from Mac OS 8.x and 9.x

Macintosh printing via Appletalk is currently working on all versions of Mac OS. It is only available through the ethernet guestnet at this time and is not available through the wireless system.

For OS 8.x and 9.x, Follow these steps.

It is possible for your mac to download the printer driver information through the network. This may not work in all cases. Try these instructions and if the driver does not load automatically, see below.

  • First, be sure your Appletalk is configured for your ethernet port. Under the apple menu, choose Control Panels, and Appletalk. Make sure that it is configured for Ethernet. Close the window and if prompted, click Save. Note: Whenever your machine is booted without the ethernet plugged in, your appletalk settings may reset to localtalk on the printer/modem port! This the most likely problem if the printer no longer appears in the chooser. In this case, you will need to repeat this step.

  • Next, under the apple menu, go to the chooser. Click on the LaserWriter 8 icon. The printer name should show up in the window. It will be np in the knoll and np2 in the trailer. Highlight the printer, and click Setup. In the next window, click Auto Setup. A window should appear that says Selecting PPD. Once this window clears, click OK. You should get an icon for the printer on your desktop. In your applications, under File, choose Print... and select the new printer. Print a page to test. If this does not work, then download the file found here. Run the hp Laser Jet Installer program. Repeat the steps above, but instead of Auto Setup, choose Select PPD... Then chose HP LaserJet 4050 Series and click Choose. Then click OK.
  • You should now be ready to print!
